Task 2: In many countries, plastic containers have become more popular than ever. They are used in many businesses, for example, food and drink industries. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
SUGGESTION: This is an essay on plastic containers, potentially concerning the environment.
It is a discussion + opinion essay. Discuss both the advantages and disadvantages of plastic containers, while also offering the writer's opinion.
KEY WORDS AND SYNONYMS:
- plastic container = plastic bag = tupperware = plastic wrap
- popular = prevalent = common = favoured = prominent
- business = field = trade = company
ANALYSIS: This is what must be covered in the essay:
-
The advantages of plastic containers
-
The disadvantages of plastic containers
-
Whether the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages
The candidate can write three paragraphs outlining the above; however, in order to save time, the writer does not need to write a 3rd paragraph just to state their opinion, but can do so in the thesis statement, in the topic sentence, and in the conclusion.
THESIS STATEMENT:
- This essay will discuss both the benefits and drawbacks of this trend, and in my opinion, the benefits/drawbacks it brings are much more prevalent.
- Although this trend certainly has its own merits/demerits, I am of the opinion that its demerits/merits carry more weight.
I. The advantages of plastic containers
- cheap price while having decent quality, being consumer friendly and versatile
+ plastic is the best choice for manufacturers when compared to other materials such as metal and paper, which are either inconvenient or unable to protect food
- reduce product deterioration, retain the beneficial effects of processing, extend shelf‐life, and maintain or increase the quality and safety of food
- may reduce food waste during transportation or consumption
II. The disadvantages of plastic containers
- plastic is a non-degradable material --> clogs the natural sources of water and floats on reservoirs when not properly disposed of
- low durability --> quickly discarded --> increases littering and waste into the environment
+ many pictures of constructions using collected plastic waste show that people's negligence has been polluting water bodies with plastic, which is getting increasingly out of hand
- in the manufacturing of plastic, many destructive chemicals are included --> negative impacts on humans and nature
