have drinks = consume drinks = ingest drinks

-
solve (v) = tackle = address = alleviate
ANALYSIS: Remember that the question only mentions “sugar-based drinks”, not “sugar” in general, or sugary foods such as sweets. Make sure to not stray from the original topic.
THESIS STATEMENT: There are several reasons causing the spike in popularity of sugar-based drinks, the main reason being people's addiction, as well as feasible solutions to alleviate this problem, both of which will be discussed in this essay.
1. The reasons
There are several reasons for why sugary drinks are rising in popularity. Pick out two at most and go more in-depth, instead of listing out all, to avoid wasting too much time.
-
Sugary drinks taste great.
- Thanks to evolution, humans have picked up the habits of liking sweet fruits more since they contain higher sugar content and therefore can supply more energy.
-
Sugar provides energy more directly and more easily.
- The body needs sugar, because sugar is more easily digested than fat or carbohydrates.
- When sugar is consumed, it enters the bloodstream after digestion, increasing the blood sugar levels and giving the energetic, buzz-like feeling sometimes referred to as a “sugar high”.
-
Sugary drinks cause addiction due to multiple factors.
- Carbonated water and flavorings all contribute to the addiction to sugar drinks due to the satisfactory feeling when ingesting.
- However, the major reason for said addiction is an ingredient called “caffeine”.
+ Caffeine is a very addictive substance, being the world's most popular psychoactive drug.
+ Caffeine can increase alertness, but require increasing doses to be effective, leaving the user exhausted after it wears off.
-
Companies and businesses abuse sugary drinks to turn a profit by launching multiple product ranges related to these products.
- Energy drinks are often marketed towards young adults who have responsibilities in addition to work, such as family obligations, or aspirations to further their education. Therefore, instead of properly drinking water and healthy drinks such as tea, people become dependent on these products.
-
Some examples to include in the paragraph:
- The average American consumed more than 70 kg of added sugar a year, approximately half of which comes from soft drinks, sports energy drinks, fruit drinks and the like.
- According to a study from the US Department of Agriculture published in 1999, people consumed almost 500% more soft drinks than they did in the 1940’s.
2. The solutions
Similarly, pick out two solutions at most and go more in-depth.
-
Governments should create awareness programs for people to give up soft drinks.
- Unlike many other addictive substances, caffeine addiction can be beaten relatively easily, with certain herbs and supplements capable of minimizing caffeine withdrawal headaches. Within 14 days, the body would be unlikely to feel the need for soft drinks anymore.
-
Policies that reduce demand for sugar need to be promulgated.
- For example, by helping children develop a healthy taste preference at an early age, the government would be able to discourage manufacturers from abusing sugary drinks.
-
The authorities should use policies to create a public health goal.
- This would encourage manufacturers and retailers to have a healthy competition for healthier drinks with fresh ingredients and no added sugar.
-
Individuals need to step up and break the bad habits on their own.
- People should give themselves the knowledge of what they are really drinking, of how many controversial chemicals they are ingesting. After that, they should take some time to think about the negative health consequences that they suffer from drinking soft drinks and really take it to heart.
- It would be impossible to quit immediately, however, easing off slowly could work wonders by creating a goal and steadily improving one's health.
- There are many delicious alternatives to sugar drinks that do not cause negative effects, such as kombucha, tea, sparkling water with fresh fruits...
